Liverpool City Region is inviting expert thinkers, innovators and practitioners to join a new AI Taskforce aimed at shaping how artificial intelligence is developed and deployed across the region. The initiative forms a central pillar of Mayor Steve Rotheram’s strategy to make the city region a global leader in ethical, inclusive and impactful AI innovation.

The volunteer-based advisory group will work alongside the UK’s first regional Chief AI Officer, Tiffany St James, to inform and drive the region’s long-term approach to AI. Taskforce members will help craft a roadmap focused on growing the local economy, improving public services and harnessing cutting-edge technologies for social good.

From education and healthcare to transport and industry, the city region is already leveraging advanced AI capabilities and infrastructure. Local researchers, public services and businesses are deploying AI to accelerate scientific research, personalise learning and boost industrial performance, underlining the region’s existing expertise.

Rotheram said the initiative is designed to ensure AI is developed and used in ways that are ethical, inclusive and focused on people, with benefits flowing to all of the city region’s 1.6 million residents. The taskforce will play a key role in coordinating efforts across sectors, helping to identify opportunities, risks and emerging trends in the fast-evolving AI landscape.

Applications are open to individuals with experience in AI research, development, ethics or real-world implementation, with particular encouragement for those with insight into sectors such as health and social care, transport and education. Successful applicants will serve on the taskforce for two years, meeting quarterly in the region with travel expenses reimbursed.
