New HMRC customers to access services through One Login

The rollout of the government’s single sign-on platform has accelerated with new customers of HM Revenue & Customs accessing services through GOV.UK One Login.HMRC compliance tool

From 9 February 2026, individuals registering for HMRC digital services who do not already hold a Government Gateway account will create a GOV.UK One Login using an email address and password, rather than the existing 10–12 digit Government Gateway ID.

The move marks another milestone in establishing One Login as the default authentication route for online public services. Once fully implemented across departments, the platform is intended to provide a single, reusable login for services ranging from tax and pensions to passports and voter registration. With HMRC joining, more than 200 government services are now accessible via the system.

The department said the rollout will be gradual and closely monitored. Existing HMRC customers with a Government Gateway account do not need to take action and will continue using their current credentials until contacted about switching. Customers who already use One Login for other services, such as managing a state pension or accessing Companies House, will also continue using Government Gateway for HMRC services.

Suzanne Newton, HMRC’s Director General for Change Delivery Group, said: “Whether filing Self Assessment tax returns online, claiming a tax refund on the HMRC app, or checking PAYE information, GOV.UK One Login will make it simpler and quicker for customers to access government digital services, while maintaining the security and reliability they expect.”
