From Assistants to Agents: Scaling AI in Government on Secure Foundations

Copy of Modernising mission-critical services (2)

Thursday 14 May (1:30pm-4:40pm) | Church House, Westminster

Government has proven the value of AI coding assistants. But the technology is moving fast. The shift from AI assistants to AI agents - capable of handling entire workflows autonomously - creates a step change in both capability and governance.

Building on the GDS AI coding assistant trial and the AI Playbook, this workshop brings together senior leaders to explore the next frontier: agentic AI.

We'll examine how government can move from AI-assisted to AI-driven workflows with the governance to match the ambition - and what this means for workforce, quality, and service delivery across government.

Senior Civil Service and AI industry experts will define what responsible agentic AI adoption looks like in government — starting with software development, where AI is most mature, and mapping the lessons to policy, operations, and citizen services.

🔧 What government attendees will leave with:

  • A working governance model for agentic AI adoption.
  • Cross-government view of AI maturity, grounded in GDS trial experience and peer insight.
  • Clarity on what agentic AI means for their teams, in terms of roles, skills and accountability.
